Singer-songwriter from Britain, Kosovo, and Albania Dua Lipa won a Grammy Award, and her hit song “New Rules” and her album “Future Nostalgia” made people fall in love with her.
What is her Name?
Dua Lipa is the girl of Kosovar Albanians who were refugees in London in the 1990s. She sings and writes songs. “Dua” means “love” in Albanian, and she doesn’t have a middle name. Lipa wanted to be a musician so much that she moved to London on her own at the age of 15 to try to make it happen. A few years ago, her family moved back to Kosovo. Before she signed with a label, she used social media to get the word out about herself. Lipa said that her early music was “dark pop,” but the songs on her successful second album, Future Nostalgia, were faster-paced. Lipa has worked with a lot of different artists, like Elton John, Miley Cyrus, and Chris Martin.
The English city of London is where Dua Lipa was born on August 22, 1995. Dukagjin and Anessa, Lipa’s parents, left Pristina, Kosovo, in 1992 to get away from trouble in the old Yugoslavia. Slobodan Milosevic went after them because they were Kosovar Albanians.
Lipa’s parents were refugees when they first came to London. Even though Lipa’s father went to school for dentistry and her mother went to school for law, they both had to work in restaurants to make ends meet in their new home. She was born in 1995.
She wrote first song when she was about four years old. Her father, who was also a dentist, played in a rock band before he went to school for dentistry. In an interview, she said, “My father was a musician, and music was always playing in the house, so it had a big effect on me.” She listened to Blondie, Prince, Bob Dylan, Sting, and Pink when she was young.
In 2006, Lipa’s parents decided it was safe enough for them to go back to where they came from. They took Lipa, who was 11 years old, and her two younger sisters and brother back to Kosovo.
Even though Lipa spoke Albanian at home, the move showed that she wasn’t good enough at the language to do well in school. Her Albanian did get better over time. She made friends, and they told her about the war in Kosovo that happened while her family was in London. Lipa also heard new music because Kosovo’s music scene was dominated by hip-hop.

When Lipa was 15, she went back to London and moved in with a family friend. She satisfy her parents to let her move because it would help her schooling. But her real goal was to sing, and she thought it wouldn’t be possible to start a career in music in Kosovo. She told CBS News that in 2020, “I thought, “I want to make music, but I want to make it for the whole world.” I need to go back to the place where everything is going on.”
Early Work Experience:
Before she moved to Kosovo with her family, Lipa went to school at the Sylvia Young Theatre School in London. She also put covers of songs on YouTube to get people’s attention. In an interview with 2020, she said, “Deep down, I wanted to have the Justin Bieber effect, where someone would find me on YouTube.”
Lipa worked in a restaurant and got paid for it. She also joined a modelling agency because she thought that it would help her career. But because she didn’t want to lose weight as the agency asked, she didn’t get many jobs.
Lipa still cared about music, so she put songs on SoundCloud. She didn’t appear on the performance-based reality show X-Factor, but she did sing in a commercial for the show. Lipa was eventually offered a deal to publish her music, which started a lucky chain of events. Lipa talked to a lawyer about the deal to get advice. The lawyer connected her with a manager who was also in charge of Lana Del Rey. Lipa chose to work with this manager in the end.
In 2015, Lipa got a record deal. That year, her first single, “New Love,” came out. More songs came out, but her album with her name on it didn’t come out until 2017. The singles from that album did okay until “New Rules” came out. More than two billion people have watched the music video for that huge hit on YouTube. The single “IDGAF” was another hit from the album.
Some people didn’t like Lipa’s growing fame, like when she was criticized in 2018 for having boring choreography. But she didn’t let the comments bother her. Instead, she used them as motivation to get better at dancing.
Success on the Rise and “Future Nostalgia”:
Lipa got Best New Artist at the 61st Grammy Prize in 2019. She also won a second Grammy that year for “Electricity,” which won Best Dance Recording.
Future Nostalgia, Lipa’s second album, was more personal than her first album. She thought of the title while she was in Las Vegas, and she wrote all of the songs on the record. Lipa was getting ready to put out Future Nostalgia at the start of March 2020. The album then got out on the Internet just as the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the whole world. Many other artists put their work on hold, but Lipa decided to release Future Nostalgia a week early.
Lipa wasn’t sure if she should release the album because of the world crisis, and the leak had put her in a tough spot. Lucky for her, people liked what she did. Lipa said that her earlier songs were “dark pop,” but this album was better for dancing. The songs had ties to music from the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, but they also had modern touches.
Popular Female Artist on Spotify:
When Lipa’s album came out, she was the most popular female artist on Spotify. Since Lipa couldn’t go on tour in 2020, she live-streamed a concert called “Studio 2054” in November. Kylie Minogue, Bad Bunny, and John were among the guests. The stream was watched by more than 5 million people, which was a record for paid views.
Lipa was nominated for six awards at the 63rd Grammys. The award for Best Pop Vocal Album went to Future Nostalgia.
Causes and Protests:
Lipa has spoken out about her support for Palestinians, abortion rights, women’s rights, Black Lives Matter, and LGBTQ rights. She has told people in the UK to vote Labour, and she supported Bernie Sanders in the 2020 U.S. presidential race.
Sunny Hill Foundation:
Lipa and her father started a group to help young people in Kosovo called the Sunny Hill Foundation. Because of what happened to her family, she worries about how immigrants and refugees will be treated in the UK after Brexit.
Life in General and Boyfriend:
Anwar Hadid is a model and the younger brother of Gigi and Bella Hadid. Lipa has been dating Anwar Hadid since 2019. Before she started dating Hadid, Lipa was with Isaac Carew.
