The Activate My5TV service is now officially live. The service is available across the country, allowing people to watch a variety of channels, both free and paid. But what does it mean to be a participant in My5TV Activate and what benefits are there to being one? Here’s what you need to know:
What is Activate My5TV?
In the beginning, Activate My5TV was known as the My5TV app. The app is designed to allow access to many of the popular pay-television channels around the country. The activation of this app, under the terms of the agreement, sees the launch of the much more ambitious platform, which is a major part of the ongoing brand re-design in the DStv platform.
By entering your TV credentials and internet data, you will be able to access the channel services and use them on any device in your home. This means that if you are watching the channels on your DStv decoder, you can continue to do so on any connected device in your house, such as your tablet, smartphone, or laptop.
There are two subscriptions available. A Free Premium Subscription costs R59/month and gives you access to all channels on the platform (anything paid for on air) and the Daily Plus Subscription costs R99/month and gives you the Daily packages plus two free subscriptions per month, also on air, on the channels mentioned above.
Can you use it outside South Africa?
Absolutely. All that is required is your credit card number and an activation code. Once the activation code has been entered into the app and activated, you will then be able to access the platform by dialling *189# from within your app, or from within your letterbox, if you have one.
When is it available and how can I access it?
The activation code will be sent to you through an SMS or email in your inbox, so it’s best to ensure that your contact details are kept current.
From 12:00 on 1 June 2018 until the end of the promotion, the activation code can be accessed through www.my5.co.za or within the Multichoice Play app.
After the 1 June promotion, you will need to log on to www.my5.co.za. Go to the Multichoice page and click on “5 Free Subscription” and enter the activation code in the field.
What if my card is not linked to the mobile banking app?
Your activation code cannot be used to purchase anything. Just like the activation code, the activation code has to be entered into the app or device that you want to subscribe to the services from.X
You can then purchase the subscriptions either through your bank’s own mobile banking app or via the Reserve Bank’s Inland Payment System, which is linked to all banking facilities.
How does the My5TV App work?

After you download the app from the Google Play Store or App Store, you will need to ensure that you have registered for the channel services with Multichoice and/or that you have your Internet data active. The app will then create a channel for you by automatically sorting channels into the My5TV suite.
Once your channel list has been sorted, simply open the app and the channel list will automatically be shown on the home screen.
Once you are done with the channel list, simply enter your TV credentials and activation code and your Internet data and you can start watching on your phone, tablet, or laptop.
So, all that is required is your TV and Internet data and a couple of minutes to activate the channels on your TV or devices.
