In 2022, what will Ruby frameworks and development tools look like? What new ones will come out? What old ones will go out of style? To find out, we asked one of the most famous names in Ruby development, Matz himself, to take the temperature of the Ruby community ten years into the future. His response was surprisingly honest and frank—some might even say controversial—and it’s going to get you talking. Here are his predictions on how Ruby frameworks and development tools will look in 2022.
RubyMine
Back in 2012, JetBrains released RubyMine, a code editor designed to be used by Ruby programmers. While they have not yet released anything officially supporting version 2.0 of their popular programming language (as of 2017), rumors have begun circulating that they will soon announce support for creating projects with 2.0.
Atom Editor
Although some Rubyists will still work in a traditional text editor like Sublime Text or vim, Atom is likely to be one of the most commonly used editors in 2022. Atom has also become a popular choice for web developers due to its robust ecosystem of packages.
Netbeans
It’s written in Java. It has very good code completion and is a pleasure to work with. The downside is it is a bit slow to launch and load files. We really hope it will be rewritten in Ruby at some point, but there are no plans for that currently.
Rubocop
As its name suggests, Rubocop is a static code analysis tool for Ruby. It checks source code against a set of predefined rules, reporting any issues it encounters along with suggestions on how to fix them. In many ways, Rubocop operates like your boss: it won’t hesitate to tell you if something you’ve done is wrong (or not Ruby), but if you pay attention to what it says and actually fix your code, things will be much smoother down the road.
Pry
Ruby is a dynamic, object-oriented programming language that was created in 2003. One of its most notable features is its implementation of meta-programming capabilities, which provide developers with hooks into core methods within their application.
Bullet
Ruby on Rails was created in 2003 by David Heinemeier Hansson. Back then, it was just a simple way to create web applications using MVC architecture but it has become much more powerful now. It is an open source platform that allows programmers to easily build web applications using Ruby programming language. Its use has grown so much over the years that many developers would say it is one of their favorite frameworks to work with due to its productivity features, fast development cycles and speedy performance.
Conclusion –
The best Ruby frameworks are those that your team can fully embrace. There are a few fantastic Ruby development tools, but no set of tools is going to be right for every team or project—it really comes down to what you need.
